Welcome to Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area

Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area is located west of Orange NSW.

This area offers a relaxing weekend getaway with 6 different walking tracks to explore, as well as a guided walking track.

Mount Canobolas gives you the opportunity to sightsee, birdwatch, walk, take a picnic, and even camp in the area.

With so much to do Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area offers a family friendly adventure that is well-worth the visit.

Let’s Walk Mount Canobolas State Conservation Reserve

Federal Falls Walk

4km Loop, 3 – 4 hours return

Take the Federal Falls Walk which is a 4km loop with stunning waterfall view.

Begin the Federal Falls Walk track at Federal Falls campground, this track leads through forest area and rock faces leading to the waterfalls.

Enter by the northern track for an easier walk through steeper areas of the trek.

This track offers a diverse range of flora and fauna including flag flowers and Australian pea flowers, or snap some pictures of the butterflies that call the area home.

If you have a keen interest in birdwatching you may also get lucky and spot the grey currawong.

Mount Towac Walk

1.7km, 30 minutes return

Take a short walk to Towac Peak, this is a fairly simple walk with rewarding views of Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area and the countryside of Orange.

If you enjoy native flora and fauna you will spot old eucalyptus tress along the path and the lichen that grows along the volcanic rock.

Start your walk from the Gum Ridge fire trail.

Along Towac Road is Towac picnic area, take the opportunity to rest or have a picnic and take in the sights and sounds of Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area.

Nature Walking Track

2km, 60 – 90 minutes loop

The Nature Walking Track is the track to take if you have a keen interest in Australia’s flora and fauna with a variety of plants and animals calling the space home.

From Walls Picnic Area, walk clockwise and trek through woodland including centuries old snow gums, candlebark trees, and Eucalyptus.

Along this short loop, take the opportunity to enjoy scenic views and snap some pictures of the birdlife in the area.

During October and November the track comes alive with wildflower displays

Take care along the rocky outcroppings as some of the lichen are endangered, beyond this is a scenic valley of fishbone ferns that leads back to the Walls Picnic Area.

Snowgum Walking Track

0.9km one way, 30mins

The Snowgum walking track is an easy walk, under 1km.

This is a family friendly walk suitable to bring children along to.

The Snowgum Walking Track leads you through the snowgum forest of Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area.

For a more challenging walk, start at the summit of Mount Canobolas or from Federal Falls campground.

Snowgums line the scenic walk offering a canopy to sit overhead to shade the way, during winter snow sometimes falls making the walk simply magical.

Summits Walking Track

2.1km return, 60 – 90 mins.

The Summits Walking Track connects two of the park’s summits, Old Man Canobolas and Young Man Canobolas. ‘

The track also connects some of the other walking tracks along the way.

From the summit of Old Man Canobolas enjoy the scenic view of Orange and the vast countryside.

Begin the jike along a downhill track that passes through snowgum woodland.

If you enjoy bird spotting watch out for the grey currawongs and white throated tree creepers that call the area home.

From there, the track winds uphill to the summit of Young Man Canobolas.

Challenge yourself by joining this track up up with the Spring Glade, Snowgum or Nature tracks; use the signs provided to guide the way.

Spring Glade Walking Track

3km return, 1hr 15mins

Spring Glade Walking Track leads to the summit of Mount Canobolas, it is a relatively easy walk and connects with several other trails in the area.

Along Spring Glade Walking Track, you’ll pass through grassy woodland and groves of trees.

For a stunning view head to the summit and take a breather or have a picnic.

To extend your walk, connect to one of the other walking tracks including Summits Walking Track or Snowgum Walking Track.

From here you can also reach Federal Falls.

Spring Glade Walking Track can be enjoyed year round, watch out for the birdlife and flora in the area or take in the amazing views the track has to offer.

If you are lucky you might spot sulphur-crested cockatoos and ringtail possums living in Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area.

Where to?

From Orange, travel along Cargo Road (A32) and then turn left onto Lake Canobolas Road. Then turn right into Mount Canobolas Road.

Flora and Fauna

There are around 950 species of plants and animals have been recorded in the park. The birdlife in the area includes thornbills, treecreepers, flame robins, wrens, honeyeaters, magpies, currawongs, and rosellas.

You might also spot kangaroos and wallabies in the area if you are lucky.
